Language of Flowers: Black Eyed Susan

  • Mar. 7th, 2009 at 9:47 PM
let's have tea!
Today learn something interesting about the flower called "Black Eyed Susan", apparently it's derived from this following old English Ballad:

Sweet William's Farewell to Black-ey'd Susan: A Ballad
John Gay (1685-1732)

1 All in the Downs the fleet was moor'd,
2 The streamers waving in the wind,
3 When black-ey'd Susan came aboard.
4 Oh! where shall I my true love find!
5 Tell me, ye jovial sailors, tell me true,
6 If my sweet William sails among the crew.

7 William, who high upon the yard,
8 Rock'd with the billow to and fro,
9 Soon as her well-known voice he heard,
10 He sigh'd, and cast his eyes below:
11 The cord slides swiftly through his glowing hands,
12 And, (quick as lightning) on the deck he stands.

13 So the sweet lark, high pois'd in air,
14 Shuts close his pinions to his breast,
15 (If, chance, his mate's shrill call he hear)
16 And drops at once into her nest.
17 The noblest captain in the British fleet,
18 Might envy William's lip those kisses sweet.

19 "O Susan, Susan, lovely dear,
20 My vows shall ever true remain;
21 Let me kiss off that falling tear,
22 We only part to meet again.
23 Change, as ye list, ye winds; my heart shall be
24 The faithful compass that still points to thee.

25 "Believe not what the landmen say,
26 Who tempt with doubts thy constant mind:
27 They'll tell thee, sailors, when away,
28 In ev'ry port a mistress find.
29 Yes, yes, believe them when they tell thee so,
30 For thou art present wheresoe'er I go.

31 "If to far India's coast we sail,
32 Thy eyes are seen in di'monds bright,
33 Thy breath is Afric's spicy gale,
34 Thy skin is ivory, so white.
35 Thus ev'ry beauteous object that I view,
36 Wakes in my soul some charm of lovely Sue.

37 "Though battle call me from thy arms
38 Let not my pretty Susan mourn;
39 Though cannons roar, yet safe from harms,
40 William shall to his dear return.
41 Love turns aside the balls that round me fly,
42 Lest precious tears should drop from Susan's eye".

43 The boatswain gave the dreadful word,
44 The sails their swelling bosom spread,
45 No longer must she stay aboard:
46 They kiss'd, she sigh'd, he hung his head.
47 Her less'ning boat, unwilling rows to land:
48 "Adieu", she cries! and wav'd her lily hand.

I am Justice

Justice is a signal to do what needs to be done. A time comes when responsibilities must be accepted, and accounts settled. The past will continue to haunt you if you do not recognize your mistakes and make amends for them. You will need to weigh matters carefully and perhaps make important decisions about your future course.

Your Score: Freak- INFJ

20% Extraversion, 53% Intuition, 40% Thinking, 53% Judging

Well, well, well. How did someone like you end up with the least common personality type of them all? In a group of 100 Americans, only 0.5 others would be just like you. You really are one of a kind... In fact, I do believe that that's one of the definitions for the word "FREAK."

Freak's not such a bad word to describe you actually.

You are deep, complex, secretive and extremely difficult to understand. If that doesn't scream "Freak!" I don't know what does. No-one actually knows the REAL you, do they?

You probably have deep interests in creative expression as well as issues of spirituality and human development.

You've probably even been called a "psychic" before, because of your uncanny knack to understand and "read" people without quite knowing how you do it. Don't fret. You're not actually psychic. That would make you special and you'll never accomplish that.

You're also quite possible the most emotional of them all, so don't take this all too hard. Nevertheless you most definitely have the strangest personality type and that's not necessarily a good thing.

This morning I awoke to a headache and at first I thought it was a migraine but I was wrong. According to my dad I may have sinusitis because my head hurts when I lay down and I have a swollen left lymph node. God! Someone kill me now! I wish I could lay down and sleep but I can’t and I want to throw up so my head will stop hurting! And I was going to go ice skating later today but that seems very unlikely now...(;_;) *weeps* Maybe if I take a shower it won’t hurt so much...

Recently I found a book in my library that I had forgotten about called "The Illustrated Book of Sign and Symbols" by Miranda Bruce-Mitford. Here are a few uncommon symbols that I found interesting.

Coral
-was thought to staunch the flow of blood from a wound
-cures madness
-imbues the wearer with wisdom
-offers protection against enchantments

Rosemary
-Signifies remembrance and is often planted on graves

Dates
-In North Africa clusters of dates represent life and fruitfulness
-Also seen as a symbol of male fertility

Sparrow
-Old Testament- the bird was viewed as a symbol of solitude and loneliness
-New Testament- represented lowliness and insignificance
-Greek mythology- linked to the goddess Aphrodite
-Japan- symbol of loyalty, perhaps because of its sociable nature

Stiletto shoe
-the elongating of the leg symbolizes femininity
-the spiky heel suggests domination

Hair
-often seen as holding strength and energy of the body as it grows from the head, seat of spiritual power.
-hair worn loosely denotes a free spirit, even wantonness
-Christian nuns cut their hair short to symbolize their renunciation of worldly vanity

Mouth
-gives judgment and so symbolizes the word
-also represents the all-devouring earth or a door into the realm of the unconscious

Doorway
-marks the passage between the sacred and profane, between safety and danger
Also symbolizes the transition from one stage in life to another

Box
-a feminine symbol
-when closed symbolizes the unconscious and when opened, it may unleash a storm of devastation, disease, and death upon the world (Pandora's box)

[I can't help but wonder if men made this symbol to justify their oppression against women in the past.]

Goose
-the bird of the sun
-associated with many Greek and Roman gods and was kept to guard temples. It thus came to symbolize watchfulness and love.

[The Canadian geese that populate my college campus are not at all 'lovable.' They hiss at you and poop everywhere!]
